St. Peter’s Church is situated on Coronation Avenue opposite some shops in the northern part of the town. It is a small brick church in attractive grounds and can seat around one hundred people. It was built in the late 1930s and opened just before the Second World War. At first it was a dual-purpose building with wooden chairs, an ancient piano and an old harmonium. Captain Weston from the Church Army was in charge in the early years. In the 1950s the church was able to purchase a deep litter fowl house which, with a little alteration, was converted into a hall. The church also had a very good choir and strong Sunday School in those days. St. Peter’s also had a loft with steps used for storage but this was eventually demolished to give more room in the church. The ladies in the church made all the altar frontals and bible book marks. Some of the church furniture and communion goblets were purchased in memory of past members of the congregation. In the early days St. Peter’s was under the authority of St. John’s in the centre of Yeovil but when the parish boundaries were divided, it came under the control of St. James in the early 1980s. Thanks to Marion and John for supplying much of this information. |
